Mathias Malling Mortensen (born in Odense, Denmark, 1980) has studied in the Danish School of Media and Journalism which he graduated from in 2013. He is thus a partly self-taught visual artist who is intrigued by shapes, figures and compositions which he finds in his surroundings. The artist lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Mortensen's style is intuitive, minimalistic and non-figurative. Through his works, Mortensen creates an emphasis on the dynamics that are found when adding empty space to a canvas, and the materiality found between space and non space. He works with these elements in an understanding of them set in layers and depth. There's a constant exploration of an interplay between color, light and shadow in his practice. He is continuously discovering new grounds of spatiality, textures, shapes and poetry in his work. The balance between the surface and shadow-casting lines make up the subject in his abstract artworks.
Mortensen works with painting, paper cuts and graphics as well as prints. The artworks presented on this page are both screen prints, which you can read more about here, as well as lithographs which can be found here. We also present wood cut and lino cut works by Mortensen. You can browse all other artists here.
