Screen printing is a technique where ink is forced through a mesh screen onto paper. By making certain areas of the mesh impenetrable by the printing ink a stencil is created, used to imprint the chosen design. 

Silkscreen vs screen print 

The printing screen was traditionally made of silk (silkscreen), but is now mostly common to be a synthetic material. The design can be transferred on to the screen in different ways, however the most common is transfer by using transparency film. To transfer the design, the screen is initially coated with a thin layer of photo-sensitive emulsion. Then the design is placed on the screen and exposed to UV-light. The design blocks the UV-light, making the emulsion soft where it was placed, which is then washed off. A thick layer of ink is applied onto the screen, and pushed through the areas not blocked by the stencil. If the image holds more than one color, the printmaker must repeat the proces with a different stencil for each color.
