Astri Styrkestad Haukaas (born 1986 in Norway) is a visual artist working across different media. Her artistic practice is driven by the process, by cause and effect, and by allowing herself to be influenced by the materials she works with. Her works stem from an exploration of the way the different materials react to and interact with one another. The artist lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Astri Styrkestad Haukaas art
Haukaas' works are non-figurative. A key component in her practice is her eye for colors, which span from deep melancholic palettes to feathery light color schemes. Her way of juxtaposing and combining them gives her works a sense of gravity, and an almost skin-like tactility. Her inspiration lies in a poetic relationship between nature and the human consciousness as the creator of subjective memories. It is thus the connection between the two instances, nature and human, which is expressed in her pieces. Her works explore the way an experience of a natural setting and its colors are embedded as a memory, which she then transfers onto a canvas, paper or glass surface.
